Uppers
When things are not that busy, the job is fairly laid back, working at own pace, sometimes on your own. Being able to expand the system in your own directions and learning new skills. Expansion is fast in this industry at the moment, so there is a lot of new things to learn and there is a lot of new systems being introduced.
Downers
24/7 callout roster can be imposing on personal life. When things are breaking outside of hours, you can easily work very excessive hours and get very little sleep. The company requires support at high levels on a round the clock basis, so high levels of importance are placed upon you at all hours.
Lifestyle
Working 48 hours per week at work, 4 x 10 hour days and 1 x 8 hour day. Not a terrible lot of travel, though trips to other mine sites are common place. Limited company social gatherings, unless they are team based. Dress code is to a uniform, which is necessary in the dangerous areas that we may work.
Compensation
Salary is decent, living in a remote region your salary is higher, this needs to weighed against the negatives of living in these regions. Bonuses are based on performance, safety, cash costs and can be quite lucrative, but can also be non existent in times of bad performance. The company has a share option scheme, which is quite good, though it runs for 3 years so it is a medium term investment. Housing can be good in some regions, but in others it won't cover the necessary expenses to live in such a remote region as this.
Advice to Jobseekers
Get experience in your field before starting to work for this company. Those that are green to the workforce have a much slower uptake. Experience in mining or large industrial is key understanding the mindset and the processes that are involved in running such a large, diverse business. Be prepared towork hard when necessary, work safely all the time and be prepared to follow processes. You won't change anything over night here, so patience is exceptionally important. Always check where you will be living as well, take a site visit where ever possible. There is some future in this job, there always will be in maintenance, but be prepared to change with the demands of the system, the company, technology and infrastructure.
