Job Responsibilities
There is no category listed for Vendor Reps/Field Merchandisers. This particular company demands complete adherence to planogram integrity maintenance in the lawn and garden department for live plants. The live plant merchandisers make sure live plants are set to specs, that the stores comply with placement and care issues and at the discretion of area supervisors, will make sure that individual stores comply with promotional issues to the point of making the store personnel dislike you. This is what most people would consider a 'mindless' summer job. It's strictly for fun, but Resource Plus can ruin it within a month if you need to actually be paid on time more than once.
Job Requirements
This level of employment as live plant merchandiser needs only to be alive and breathing. This is a college summer job. No challenge and no brains needed. Just put the plants where they belong. It's a good way to network with locals however...
Uppers
I love the job, but hate having the host company (Lowe's) that we are contracted to dislike the heavy handed and unprofessional style shown by anyone above my level. I can't believe they scored this contract. No other vendor company I have ever worked for has been this disorganized, have as many pay issues (hours dropped completely off pay checks, etc..) in 5 years of this work with other professional and reliable vendor companies. You do not know from week to week what issues your supervisor was misinformed about and has had to deal with. VERY HIGH stress level and uncooperative employees. And those are the UPPERS.
Downers
Everyone in this company seems to be trying to leave or resolve payment issues. Lots of disillusioned employees, no grasp by the company on how to treat employees or host store (Lowe's), poor communication and lots and I mean LOTS of confusion and mistrust. I rate this company as a 4 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being highest. I have never (even on the worst levels) found a company to have so much internal mismanagement when the company is as large as this one. This company alone could ruin the name of merchandising and vendor work by its nationwide (no exag) reputation for being inept.
Lifestyle
Pay is on the lower end of vendor/merchandising work. You will not truly know how many hours you have even after being told how many you will have. The good part is you can write your own schedule. This company is not for the easily frustrated. Bad communications, pay issues and lack of concern about them. On the other hand you get to work with plants and that's a plus. Just don't expect to be able to water them, groom them or order them. You are just there to put them out on the displays and write credits when they expire or bloom out. Depending on your supervisor...you may live this job in constant worry that you actually 'helped' the store beyond your very limited job description..and that could get you fired. This company will surely tank in the next few years without reasonable guidance or they will be forced to branch out into other areas of this very lucrative business and go on to screw people for years to come who think they signed up for an honest and decent job. Too bad Lowe's doesn't realize what these people are raping them with and for. Bad choice for a company who wants to overtake Home Depot. But hey, this is still a great job. I can't even explain all the why's.... Don't expect honesty or honest communications. Everyone is just covering their behinds until they can get on with a legit company. This company will literally hire anyone with the ability to say 'yes'. Bad publicity for the Exotic Angels, Ontario Flower Growers and other companies offering plants through Lowes and being represented by these clowns.
Compensation
$10 hour. Low end vendor work/merchandiser work pay scale. Uncertain hours. You are hired on for 24-30 hours for instance and then each week you can expect 5 to 38 hours. Seasonal work. Payment issues remain unresolved for sometimes weeks. You can't count on them to pay exactly what is owed to you exactly when they say they will...and when you have issues with their underpayment, NOBODY in the company will help you. Now I have to add this: my personal experience is with two weeks witheld type payment situation (not often practiced in real vendor work either anymore) but I have personally spoken to many current and past employees now about this issue. It's real and it's dangerous to plan your bills around your expected pay. You only meet two kinds of people with actual knowledge of this company..those who are wanting to find a less stressful job and those who hope to God they will be paid what they are owed. Lowes must have gotten a really great deal out of this company.
Advice to Jobseekers
Run far away and get a job with a stabilized and legitimate company who will treat their employees with respect. This company has proved itself to RESPECT NO HUMANS OR CORPORATE CLIENTS. No jokes here. If you expect to be paid on time with accuracy this is NOT the company to begin your career with. These guys have been and are in....over their heads. Bad practices. Vendor work is a responsible industry. Resource Plus has made a bad joke and a growing bad reputation out of this work. Vendor work is respectable and pays well. Expect legit companies to request all candidates submit to a drug test and background checks.
