Job Responsibilities
Mostly I am the chef 4 shifts of out 5, I do reception shifts 1
day out of 5, although that was my previous position, the chefing
position was meant to be temporary. I also cover night time duty
manager shifts supervising the hotel from 11pm to 7am.

Job Requirements
Completed a BA in Hospitality Management this year done outside
of work time independently, classes were good and I enjoyed the
experience but the degree has got me nowhere jobs wise.
|
Uppers
Dealing with colleagues and guests, everyday you see different people.
|
Downers
The pay is minimum wage, no chance for career progression into management, work
hours vary and are unsociable.
|
Lifestyle
Hours vary, reception shifts are 7am to 3pm and 3pm to 11pm. Chef hours are 4pm
to 11pm, night shifts are 11pm to 7am. No real business travel or company social
events, uniform is black polo shirt with black trousers and shoes. No real
diversity in the job although it is not a 9-to-5 job; you'l find that despite
dealing with different people you are doing the same tasks over and over again,
which can get boring and repetiative.
|
Compensation
My positions whether reception, chef or night time, are paid ??5.05 per hour, the
minimum wage in the UK. No bonuses on offer despite regularly meeting our
targets, no stock options available and dicounts at other hotels vary and are
difficult to get unless the manager is willing to arrange them for you, which is
not very often.

Advice to Jobseekers
think carefully before taking accepting, often you are offered a trial period
and use it to decide whether the position is right for you, get possible pay
increases sorted in the interview and ask how likely they are to apply to you.
ask about career progression and depending on how good at the job you are how
soon can career progression take. I have worked with many people
in my current place who have quit after only a few weeks there. The leisure and
hotel services industry is growing but the competition is causing pay levels to
remain low at floor level whilst managers pay increases. I have been working the
hospitality industry for 7 seven years but my current place has put me off
totally and I myself am now looking for a new position having been constantly
promised pay increase and career progression which never happen.
