Job Responsibilities
Local governmental relations including legislative. Manage relationships with community leaders, governmental leaders and the business community in order to be "the face" of my Company. Participate in community events and organizations, manage contributions and sponsorships for key charitable and civic organizations.
Job Requirements
Individuals in this position essentially have no career path. While educational requirements generally focus on public relations, political science or related fields, these positions are mainly based on community contacts and relationships. An individual in this position generally becomes more valuable as time passes because contacts and relationships continue to expand and increase. Individuals in these positions tend to remain there throughout their career.
Uppers
Total flexibility in managing time. This job requires self-starters who are generally type A personalities who work well with a diverse body of officials and organizations. Perks include freedom to golf with customers and community leaders; paid country and dining club memberships; access to sky boxes and generous expense budgets.
Downers
In my corporation pay scales for these jobs rank well below those of other corporations within the industry as well as corporations and private firms outside the industry.
Lifestyle
Work hours are entirely flexible, travel is required but is not unreasonable. As the "face" of the company our input is needed and respected because we have a frontline knowledge of what our customers are saying. Dress code is "country club casual" meaning that golf shirts and slacks are appropriate for every day wear. Diversity is not an issue since individuals in these positions are selected purley for their community and individual relationships.
Compensation
Current salary range for these positions is between $50,000 and $140,000. Unfortunately, the company does not look at the top of the range but rather at the mid-point of the range which means that few employees exceed the midpoint. Bonuses max out at $8000 per year.
Advice to Jobseekers
This is not an entry-level job. Most individuals holding these positions are mature at age 40 and above. To qualify, one must have worked within the community for a relatively long period of time building personal relationships and contacts. Individuals interested in this type of position should become active members of a wide variety of community civic, professional and charitable organizations. Generally, the company is looking for leaders, i.e., those who have demonstrated their leadership ability by serving as officers and/or directors of multiple organizations.
