Job Responsibilities
Scheduling meetings (12 hours) Data Analysis (12 hours) Data Entry (8 hours) Research on web or in literature (4 hours) Order supplies, clear paper jams, answer questions (4 hours)
Job Requirements
This position requires a college degree due to the complexity of the legal issues and data analysis involved. Many administrative positions within Providence Health System require a high school diploma; some require a college degree.
Uppers
Excellent benefits, including almost four weeks of vacation annually, an employer sponsered retirement fund (there is also one that I contribute to, but it's separate from this one), and, of course, great health benefits.
Downers
This employer is a Catholic healthcare system and I don't agree with every position taken because of this point of view.
Lifestyle
The published work hours are 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday through Friday, but there is a general atmosphere of acceptability for minor variations to this. For example, I take the bus to and from work. There has never been a problem with my leaving a few minutes early to catch the bus and avoid having to wait 15 to 20 minutes for the next bus. My employer sponsors many events, including free lunches, movies, and holiday parties. The dress code is business attire; I wear a tie most days. Diversity is a major issue here and is constantly stressed and reinforced.
Compensation
I make just under $40,000 a year. There are minor holiday bonuses, such as gift certificates to local stores, but my employer prefers to put most of this into salary and retirement plans, where it really counts. As I stated in #3 above, the vacation, retirement, and medical benefits are excellent.
Advice to Jobseekers
Learn a wide variety of computer applications, get a college degree, and keep your thinking flexible. Be ready to shift your thinking and your efforts as situations dictate. Learn to problem solve and manage time and projects. Don't get into a rut or into habitual ways of doing things. Embrace change.
