Job Responsibilities
As a Project Manager in Information Technology you oversee the application development effort of new business applications. You are responsible for defining requirements, scheduling, budget, and reporting to management on the progress of the project.
Job Requirements
Education generally consist of a undergraduate degree in business or computer science, courses needed to sit for the PMI Project Management certification. These classes are available from a number of vendors at a cost of $1,000 to $27,000.
Uppers
The right project gets you visability. You get to interact with all levels of the organization. If the project is successful you are successful.
Downers
You job is closly tied to the project. If the project is cancelled you may be out of work. Your responsible for all aspects of the project. It is sometimes difficult to manage multiple people accross different department when they don't report directly to you.
Lifestyle
Generally as a PM the work hours are long since there are deadlines that must be met. Business travel and dress code depend on the company and project. In todays business environment of tight budgets social events are a thing of the past.
Compensation
In the past few years compensation for IT people in general has decreased. PM's generally get somewhere between 75K and 125K. There is no job security.
Advice to Jobseekers
Choose a different profession. I/T is now outsourced to India and China where the people work for far less salary. The field is changing at a rapid pace and what you study in college will be useless by the time your graduate. It safe to say that almost every US company outsources some of their IT operations offshore.
