Uppers
Travel to exotic locals can be both an incentive.
Work can be very intellectually challenging and interesting.
Great way to spend at least a portion of your working time outdoors.
Pay is above average.
|
Downers
Travel to exotic locals can also be a disincentive. Schedules
can be sporadic which does not allow a person to establish a
routine in their lifestyle. Travel demands can be difficult to
accomodate for a woman with family or interested in having
children.
Some base locales are not exceptionally comfortable.
Can be physically hard on the body. This can be cummulative,
and not exhibit symptoms until later years.
|
Lifestyle
Frequent travel, short notice to travel, and often long trips of up to 6 weeks
for field work.
Some companies are reasonable about not expecting numerous unpaid evening and
weekend work, while others definately take advantage.
Dress codes varies from very casual, to business casual. Formal business is
usually reserved for managers attending formal meetings.
|
Compensation
Stock options are the key to decent renumeration. Salaries are
average to high ($60 to 105 K depending on # years experience).
Many (perhaps 50%) companies give a performance bonus. Most
have health coverage/plans and pension plans
