Job Responsibilities
Teaching 4 sections of upper level communication classes. class prepartion, grading, office hours for students, committee meetings, takes about 60 hours a week to do a good job. Your major responsibility is to continue to learn from your students.
Job Requirements
I started out to be an elementary teacher. But I quickly learned that I loved to research and find practical application for the theory i was learning. I also found the academic environment stimulating--I loved the classroom discussions at the college level. I also found a mentor in my 2nd semester and that MADE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. With her guidance I was able to get depatment scholarships in communication that paid for my jumior year.
Uppers
I can mostly choose my own schedule. I design my own classes. I have the opportunity to be creative and I get paid well. I have summers off and I have a great sense of helping people meet their career goals. Improving Communication skills can help individuals personally as well as professionally, so I have a tangible goal that I can meet with every student. It is very rewarding work.
Downers
Walking into a new classroom of 125 students in a lecture hall each semester can be stressfull. It takes A LOT OF ENERGY to be fresh and interesting, your students deserve the BEST you have to offer and that takes WORK. you can out in 14-16 hour days during the semester and then stay pu till 3:00am grading during final exams. Not every student is there to learn and that can make the classroom atmosphere difficult. Profs that are there "just to do the minimum" will not appreiciate your efforts to be creative and introduce new and different ideas.
Lifestyle
Great dress code. Campus style. I attend 2 or3 conferences around the country each year. I live in a college town. The cultural expierence is outstanding. movies, theatre, ethnic foods, poetry readings, music of every description. I love my life! How do you do this? LOVE TO LEARN--BE CREATIVE--Want to help people understand themselves and grow--LOVE PEOPLE--DON"T BE AFRAID. Get a teaching assistantship when you apply to Grad school. Teach anywhere you can--volunteer to teach summer camp--teach--senior adults--teach anyone--get the expierence.
Compensation
$50,000.00 full health coverage retirement benefits plus options to teach spring and summer semseter for addtional funds. I also consult with businesses and do training sessions in communication skills.
Advice to Jobseekers
the need for communication trainers and professors will continue to grow. the new emphasis is on mediated technology and the effect it has on our communication and interpersonal relationships. I suggest you look into that area as an up and coming field.
