Job Requirements
The academic nature of the program in any school is a most important component of the total school program. The curriculum is driven by standards with quality teachers who have high expectations for all students. The curriculum is set by the state. However, reform models with proven track records are selected by staff and parents. Our grading system is more demanding than most, for example, 80 represents a C. The workload is manageable and appropriate for the position.
Uppers
Working with children who are enthusiastic about learning is the best part of my job. My position greatly impacts the success of my students and staff. I love meeting new people and working with the community. I enjoy facilitating workshops and serving as a role model. Most of all, I love the hugs I get from my children.
Downers
The worst part of my job is trying to reach parents who do not want to be a part of their child's educational success. It's very frustrating to be creative with funds that are not enough to support your total program. The level of respect for administrators is at an all time low.
Lifestyle
The attire for this position is professional, with Friday usually labeled as a "dress down" day. I have to remember to "dress down" professionally. There is a limited amount of business travel to conferences that are mostly interesting and quite informative. We deal with a diverse population of students and staff; this makes the job personally and spiritually rewarding. It's a very demanding job with no set "quitting time."
Compensation
The salary is highly competitive. Health benefits are excellent. There are no stock benefits. Bonuses are given to schools as incentives for meeting goals set by the system.
Advice to Jobseekers
The job outlook for principals for the future is very good. Good principals are in demand. If you are considering this position, one must be aware of the demand on your time. It is not an ideal position for a young person just starting a family.
