Uppers
If you have a passion for Technology, then you can truely excel in the field. However some Firms and their management, seeing your passion for your job will try their hardest to knock the wind out of your sails
Downers
Very long hours, no weekends off and Holiday weekends generally mean working 3 days in a row. If you are going to work in IT, be very aware that system changes generally occur on weekends and Holidays therby minimizing the risk to online systems and impact to users. Also, be aware, with the current offshoring trend, no ones job is secure. Finally, IT no longer commands the respect it used to. Most corporations and "Firms" consider it a cost and usually slash IT budgets and jobs at the first mention of revenue losses or a poor economic market.
Lifestyle
For the most part, if you work for a smaller company, you can have a work/home life balance. Larger corporations and "Firms", although they talk about home/work balance are actually the worst in providing this balance.
Compensation
Salary and bonuses used to be better than they are at current. However, gone are the days where you can command the salary that an IT professional did in the 1980's and especially during its heyday in the 1990's. In other words, paying off the student loans may not be as easy as you would have thought.
Advice to Jobseekers
Stay away from the Big 4, especially PricewaterhouseCoopers, they are the first to downsize at even the hint of lowered projected earnings. Stay away from Banking as they are consolidating/re-organizing and downsizing on a continual basis. Look for a smaller company with a potential for growth and long term stability.
