Job Responsibilities
As a Senior Associate, I am responsible for managing smaller projects or work streams within larger projects. My job changes on a daily basis. I am also involved in developing new service offering and "thought leadership," winning new business, and mentoring junior staff.
Job Requirements
All employees have an undergraduate degree, usually in accounting, finance, or business. Many have a graduate degree such as a MBA, Masters of Public Policy, or Masters of Organizational Management. There are also Ph.D holders in economics and MIS.
Uppers
There are a lot of great things about my job. I work with brilliant people. There is an incredible amount of variety - no two days are alike. There is a strong culture of leadership and mentoring, including a formal peer coaching program. There are many opportunities to be involved in all aspects of the business. We also have a lot of access and exposure to senior leadership.
Downers
The hours can be rough at crunch time, and occassionally there can be last minute travel.
Lifestyle
We typically work 10-12 hour days. Depending on your industry focus, people travel 10-90% of the time (for example, government consultants travel far less than telecomm consultants). The dress is business casual. The firm has a major initiative to be considered a "great place to work." This includes vacation incentives, bonuses, frequent happy hours, and social events. The firm is ranked among the best places to work for working mothers, and has a strong focus on retaining minorities.
Compensation
Associates - $40-60K Senior Associates - $60-80K Managers - $80-100K Vacation - 14 days for new hires, 22 days for experienced hires and employees with two years of service. These are estimations. The firm doesn't actually publish salary bands for the consulting practice.
Advice to Jobseekers
Be aggressive, be dynamic, be flexible. Don't come to work here if you want a 9-5 job in which you do the same thing day after day. This is a job for people who are smart and eager. Consulting is also a great stepping stone towards other career opportunities.
