Job Responsibilities
Prospecting for new business is my major responsibility. I have to find approximately 7 new clients per month. I need to do about 49 end user presentations to achieve this. I spend about 6 hours a day prospecting for new business. I call on 10 new businesses a day, 10 current clients, 5 CPA's for referrals. I need to have 7 presentations per week. Most weeks I spend approximately 5 hours on paperwork. I also do about 1 hour of telemarketing per day. Most often I am in my territory networking with small businesses.
Job Requirements
I have a business degree. To work for Paychex in sales you need a degree and a minimum 3 years sales experience. All employees are sent to Rochester, NY for training. We all have to pass a job dependent test at the end of the 2 week training course to continue our employment with Paychex. It helps to have a business degree, experience with accounting as well as sales experience.
Uppers
I love the challenge of finding small businesses to help. I get to meet wonderful people. The rewards are great when you make your numbers and the potential is unlimited.
Downers
The paperwork. Because we are dealing with payroll and human resources for small businesses, we are required to balance payroll back to the beginning of the year. We have to collect a variety of information from our clients and have short turn around times. Also, you start over every month. We do not have residual income. You are only as good as your last sale. Lots of pressure.
Lifestyle
We work between 45 and 60 hours per week. We are all local reps so travel is minimal. I do a lot of networking, so I work early mornings and late into the evening some days. Their is flexibility with the job. We work our territories like they are our own businesses.
Compensation
Base salaries for our position are $32,000/year. We get commissions and bonuses on a monthly basis. We earn stock options based on longevity with the company and performance. Benefits are great. We have an expense reimbursement of $440 per month. Earnings are unlimited.
Advice to Jobseekers
It is a growing industry. Every business needs payroll and some human resource services. We provide a great service to the small business owners and keep them out of trouble with the IRS. Working for Paychex provides you with great experience and opportunity within the company as well as working for other companies. We are highly respected employees and often recruited by other companies.
