Job Responsibilities
Business Analysis, Oracle Database Design, Design, code, test and debug in Oracle 8 PL/SQL and Oracle Forms, Reports, PL/SQL database triggers, stored procedures and functions. Troubleshoot client problems. Extract data for and interact with other programming teams. Mentor junior members of my team.
Job Requirements
Requires an AA in Computer Science or a Bachelors degree in any field and the ability to pass a logic test. To progress in carreer path requires some hard work and luck. It is not easy to get assigned to a team that uses new technology, Oracle, Visual Foxpro, Visual Basic, Java. Half of the staff is still working on mainframe technology using COBOL and Natural/ADABAS.
Uppers
It is challenging and rewarding. The benefits are great and the salaries are improving.
Downers
There have been cut backs in tuition reimbursement and almost all senior staff are on call at least some nights and weekends. There are some tight time deadline and stressful situations. There are some difficult clients to deal with.
Lifestyle
It depends on your management. The work hours are usually daytime and the amount of flexibility and overtime varies from supervisor to supervisor. The stress level and dress code can vary from low key to high stress depending on the manager's style and any impending deadlines. The company related social events are usually kept to a minimum.
Compensation
Base salary varies widely from government positions to private industry. My state position was 35 hours per week so it paid less ($70,000) but the benefits were great. The state government pays no bonuses of stock options. In that respect, it may be better to work for the federal government (has a thrift saving plan) or for private industry.
Advice to Jobseekers
Work hard and pay attention to detail. It takes a few years of hard work to get recognized. Don't get discouraged!
