Job Responsibilities
Major responsibilities include contacting clients and gathering data to research solutions to problems. Problems/issues include hazardous waste, solid waste diversion, use and recycling. I also provide technical data to aircraft technicians to improve their job and avoid or decrease overall maintenance costs. Most items require documentation and intermediate and final reports.
Job Requirements
Bachelor Science in Engineering is required and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering is ideal to add on while employed in this field for the best diversity and career growth. Don't run off and get a Master's Degree before you have your first job- you won't get more pay because you still don't have the experience and you have now specialized in something you have never really worked at. So what have you gained? Be patient and get your Master's after you have had a job or two so you can see the best area to specialize and will benefit you most.
Uppers
Travel, travel, travel...I have seen the world and have met some of the best people by doing work for them. You learn to be the master of nothing and the jack of all trades with an engineering degree- life is very flexible- which is great! Once you have the engineering basics, you can do many versions of jobs.
Downers
No over-time, so if you want to earn extra money for the holidays, a specail trip, etc. you can't do it for the government.
Lifestyle
The dress code is very casual the further West you go. East coast is more formal and CA and Hawaii are casual. There is a lot o diversitya nd opportunities to move around the world and work overseas for a few years and then return to our job in the states. Their is a great quality of life- no weekend work and no late evenings...however..weekend travel is on your own time- no pay for that.
Compensation
YOu are enrolled in a 401K plan with the gov't matching 5% of your contirbution. Base salaries are good for engineers and the intern program guarantees yearly raises on a fast-track. Say $30K to $45K in a few years. Not a lot of bonuses and no stock options.
Advice to Jobseekers
Work private industry first before you work fo rthe government. It is not for everyone. Everything you do is watched closely since you are using taxpayers dollars. YOu must be ethical and flexible. Engineers will always be needed for the government. Other "specialists" are not very valuable and jobs are not stable.
