Usually you need at least a bechelors degree, and a law degree or
an MPA is helpful.
|
Uppers
Lots of free food and drink at the various receptions that you are expected to
attend.
|
Downers
You never leave work at the end of the day. Usually when it is
time to punch the clock, there are many meetings and events you
are supposed to attend, and other things that you should be doing.
|
Lifestyle
Very busy.
|
Compensation
I started at $20K and moved up to $33K within a year and a half.
No bonuses. With many of these positions, you will start low,
and then they will give you raises as you prove yourself.

Advice to Jobseekers
I worked for a US Senator in Washington and a State Senator in a
district office in NY. The absolute key is to find someone to
work for who you admire and respect as a person. Anything less
will do a disservice to both you and your boss. Working for the
right boss can make the job a truly rewarding experience, and the
office can become like an extended family. It just makes it
easier to get up and go to work in the morning.
