Job Responsibilities
My major responsibilties included about 2 hours a week in strategy planning meets with management to determine the resolution of problems. I spent the rest of the 38 hours a week looking through the programming code to determine where a problem might exist and attempting to resolve that problem.
Job Requirements
I had a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems with mediocre grades. The reason why I was hired was primarily because of my passion for Information Technology. I had been programming in one language or another since the age of 7 and was able to accurately convey that to the interviewers. The majority of my fellow co-workers had at least a B.S in Computer Science with a majority of co-workers having a M.S in CS.
Uppers
The best parts of the job centered around finding the answer to a complicated problem. Determining where a problem may lie and finding a resolution to that problem could be pretty satisfying. Additionally, the lifestyle of the position was quite nice and the pay was pretty decent as well.
Downers
Not much autonomy in the position. Management constantly was making demands for resolutions of problems that were unreasonable. Management was also not technically trained, so they did not have the requisite area of skill to be able to assist you with any technical problem that arose. Further, they had no indiciation to how long a problem should take to resolve.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle of the position was pretty nice. The work hours were 9-6 with an hour for lunch. The dress code was business casual and the overall atmosphere was pretty laid back. There was great diversity amongst the programmers, both in background and ethnicity. There was not much business travel and not much in the way of company social events.
Compensation
The pay was pretty nice as paying an entry level programmer around $55,000 year. There was no opportunity to earn bonuses, however, each year a person's salary was adjusted for cost of living. The benefits were also nice covering Health/Dental and Life insurance.
Advice to Jobseekers
Just be weary of advancement inside the company. Technology is constantly being outsourced to India so stability is a definite question mark for any programmer analyst. However, if you can deal with the instability the pay is nice as well as providing for a pretty comfortable lifestyle.
