Job Requirements
I developed an interdisciplinary masters degree program based on
a series of interviews with people in the career path I was
seeking prior to my graduate degree. The degree consisted of a
combination of classes from the MBA pgrogram an the industrial
organizational psychology masters programs. The result was a
rather rigorous program of classes that were all very applicable
to the career I was originally pursuing as a change mangement
consultant and incorporated very applicable coursework and
experiences.

Uppers
My current job requires a high degree of self-motivation, innovation, and sense
of accomplishment as we grow this fledgling software company. I am currently in a
company and position where I am pursuing my passions and utilizing my talents
while helping to develop children, improve drop out rates in education, support
education reform, and promote character education.

Downers
The most difficult part of my job is the degree of responsibility
I have as a member of this 9 person company with large
aspirations. My biggest personal challenge is focusing on the
development and project management details of all the smaller
projects that fall into my realm of responsibility, and sometimes
outside of my realm of knowledge and interest.

Lifestyle
I am personally driven by working in a smaller company where my specific
contributions have a large impact on the growth and development of the company.
Working for any small growing company tends to have longer than average hours and
requires a high degree of commitment. I currently travel a couple days a month,
and often have to attend other events and functions during the week and
occasionally on weekends to improve and make required networking connections.
Fortunately, the days I spend in the office tend to be a little less formal and I
often wear jeans to work.

Compensation
Often times, working in a small growing company requires a little
bit of a gamble in terms of compensation on the front end, but
has a high potential if things go well and as percentages of
ownership increase. I took a 25% pay cut from my previous career
on the thought that things would pay off in the log run and I
receive bonuses based on performance and earn commissions based
on the amount of business I bring in. Keep in mind that benefits
are often a little challenged when compared to the resources of
larger companies, but your the potential and breadth of
experience and exposure you can get from a smaller company is
often significantly greater.

Advice to Jobseekers
I strongly recommend spending time on self-discovery and thinking
about your passions and interests to better pursue a career that
is in line with those interests. Ultimately, people should think
about their definition of success and happiness and let those be
the guides to the career that you choose. I also strongly
recommend developing and writing out your goals on a consistent
basis if you want to create a more fulfilled life and a
successful career.
