Job Responsibilities
To advise the organization on Technological System Selections, validating that they can seamlessly integrate into our existing technological eco-system and infrastructure. Taking into account on Hardware Platforms, Operating systems, Databases, storage considerations, network protocols and security. 25~35% of my time is spent here. Reviewing Mission Critical systems as needed, that may be having problems or issues attaining and maintaining 99.xx% availability or stability, and finding solutions to attain and maintain these SLA's, ~15% of my time is spent here. Assisting in the troubleshooting of problems with Mission Critical Systems, ~5% of my time spent here. Evaluating new technologies and trends in our industry and determining needs of our organization and the best timeframes to implement these if applicable, otherwise known as "visioning" ~25% of my time is spent here. Participating and advising on the "technological" side of Project Implementations and coordinating the appropriate resources as needed to assure a successful implementation, ~15- 20% of my time is spent here. Helping non technical Senior and executive staff understand technolgies and their practicalities, ~5% of my time spoent here.
Job Requirements
4 years college degree in CICS engineering. 3 years Programming varous languages, Cobol, C, C++. Etc. 5 years hands on System Management/Engineering Mastering at least one, preferably two Operating systems. 2 years obtaining Master level Certification in Oracle. 3 years practicing Oracle by maintaining Databases. 1 Year obtaining MCSE. 5+ Years Managing Programming Developers, System Engineers, Oracle DBA's etc. While "Depth of experience" and mastery of at least 2-3 technical diciplines is important to becoming an IT Architect or a Senior IT Architect, the Breadth of one's experience is what moves one to the next level, being able to converse intelligently with Engineers, DBA's and Programmers is important, however being able to communicate with non technical executives, clearly and concisely is also an imperative and no amount of "technical training" can prepare you for this.

Simplifying incredibly Complex solutions and facilitating thier successful implementation. Seeing the results of your contributions and how they benefit users and ultimately customers. The ability to work with a very diverse and intelligent set of individuals, from CEO's, CTO's, Engineers, Project Managers etc. The ability to excersize your creativity! There are no Problems just hidden solutions! The world is always changing! I can work from anywhere! No Drudgery!
Downers
Sometimes, having to explain very complex problems in very small words and simplistically. Working with people whom find it difficult to embrace change or will not consider new methodologies.
Lifestyle
Being regarded as the "Technological Consience" of an organization and a trusted advisor to multiple levels of the organization is demanding and time consuming,and while this position is well compensated and salaried, your availabilty to all persons at all hours is important. Business Travel can vary, while working as a Technology Architect on the Vendor side can be put you in a position of visiting multiple cities around the country or around the world weekly. Working as a Technology Architect on the Customer side or "Resident Expert", will limit Travel, but Conference's and symposiums are a must to keep up technologically, beware or "Non-working" conferences or boon-doggles.
Compensation
Salaries Vary based on Experinece from the low $100,000.00 to the $175,000.00. Bonuses and benefits will also vary by employer.
Advice to Jobseekers
The most important things to recognize about this position are: 1). A strong work ethic is imperative, this is not a 40 hour a week job, its a life! 45-60 hours a week is normal but its fun! 2). In order to achieve this level of expertise some long hours will be required. 3). Hands on experience is invaluable and highly regarded. 4). Love your work or you'll burn out fast, embrace change and facilitate it! 5). Teach Tech, its rewarding, this can be done by mentoring or just explaining things. 6). Ultimately you are a trsuted advisor to all levels of the organization, your integrity is paramount!
