Job Requirements
BS in a science with some biology, math and physics. five years undergrad or four plus 1 year post grad school at a hospital which includes intensive clinical laboratory work.
Uppers
OK salary. a profession that helps people, and that's important for me. great tranportability of job. can work anywhere in usa and can work as a traveling lab tech, moving from one place to another on temporary assignment. techs have some status as medical professionals but are at the bottom of the heap when compared to doctors and nurses. shortage of techs makes it easy to find jobs.
Downers
Routine, uncreative job but can become very stressful due to emergiencies and/or high work load. has a high degree of responsibility (mistakes can harm or kill someone) especially when working blood bank. no advancement within skill set. for advancement must move into management or corporate sales. most techs get into field for technology, not management and schooling includes almost no management. lab techs that move into management are untrained and perhaps salary tops off there. base salary is around $30,000 in some states. no bonuses. stock options. benefits - medical, some dental and optical.
