Job Responsibilities
I was a controls programmer for turbine controls. I really
didn't work too hard until a project came due. I would travel
to power plants and install these controls which were just the
computers that run these big machines. It was a dumb job but
paid well. My hours varied from 30hrs-80hrs/wk.

Job Requirements
I was a mechanical engineer from Colorado State University. I
worked pretty hard. Probably 40 hrs+ including classes. It was
hard to keep up with the homework that was due about twice a
week but in the end it wasn't anything compared to law school.

Uppers
Easy hours. It's an honorable profession, I mean I wasn't cold calling people
over the phone. I got to do what I wanted when I wanted and wear whatever I
wanted.
|
Downers
No girls. You work with dudes that love to talk about stupid
stuff like how fast their PCs are.
|
Lifestyle
It was easy lifestyle. I left my work at work after putting in 8 hrs. I really
didn't work hard and the only real pressur was when you were on site and a
deadline was approaching but it's all mental so people can't put a real handle on
how long stuff should take so I'd milk them.

Compensation
$50k/hr + overtime. If I had more jobs I could have broke 100k
but business was slow. That's a pretty good salary for fresh
out of school and living in colorado where it's cheap to live.

Advice to Jobseekers
It's a stable field. I would say that business or engineering
are the only two majors where you can be assured of getting a
job when you graduate.
