Uppers
Truly understanding people and more importantly understanding yourself. Teaching and running an honest business which directly helps people is very fulfilling in terms of creating a better community, a more balanced lifestyle for those involved, and a sense of accomplishment that is hard to find these days. With the promises of instant gratification and recognition, our modern society has become quite lazy and expectant of others to do the work. This approach allows all to begin at the base level and develop over time.
Downers
Certain areas of community interest are extremely difficult to tap and the history of martial arts in America has led to very poor impressions of traditional self defense systems. With sports and tournament based systems springing up all over... if I had a penny for every... The ability to promote a serious, more practical image of what a martial artist does and lives is sometimes quite frustrating. However, one must realize that not all people are ready for such belief and understanding and that those interested will find a place they can grow.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle is probably one of the most beneficial in the world. Not only is physical activity, mental focus, and spiritual awareness a primary prereq for this role, but one is essentially making a living with skills that must be done properly and taught in a way that is understood by students. Travel is quite common when working with students who have earned the level of instructor and teach far away from home. Regularly scheduled training/social functions occur 3 to 4 times yearly for the region and once for the nation. There are no restrictions by political, regligious, or financial influences and this truly allows for an environment open to all people and ideas.
Compensation
Base salary for an executive member in charge of large operations for a region and up is approx $1 million. School owners can usually generate $150-400,000 annually.
Advice to Jobseekers
In this arena there are many charlatans and cheats. Be wary of schools that seem to have consistently crowded classes, yet few familiar faces each time around. Also, if use your judgement, not what they tell you. Many a martial artist has been seduced by sweet words and cocky attitudes. Keep an open mind and an instructor will be made available to you. This is a long-term commitment to develop over the course of 3-5 years depending on your business/physical/meditative prowess. Stay true to the course and be sure to do your research.
