Job Requirements
Started out as a Marketing Associate, promoted to Asst. Brand Manager 8 months later, Brand Manager within a year, Senior Brand Manager within 10 months, and Director within 10 months. Company prefers MBA grads and those with relevant experience (marketing, consulting, general business).
Uppers
Setting both the strategic direction for my brands as well as leading the development on new products and advertsing.
Downers
The pay. Its not consulting or banking salary levels. Becoming too specialized within one industry. Many companies that recruit for their marketing departments look for people with industry experience rather than functional experience.
Lifestyle
Work hours are not light given I work in a fast paced industry and in NYC. At my level, there is a lot of pressure to dleiver great products, great presentations, and great results. Culturally, marketing tends to attract people who are passionate about marketing (we don't do it fo rthe money!!) so if you are a likeminded individual, you will find this career path rewarding. Otherwise, you won't 'get it'. There is no typical marketing culture--P&G's vibe is vastly different from L'Oreal's or J&J's for example.
Compensation
My base is probably below average at $120K but my bonus is good about $35M. Benefits are good--all the health, 401K, standard stuff.
Advice to Jobseekers
Be passionate about marketing and genuinely interested in the industry because in order to be a good marketer you need to have a love for the product. Be in touch with cultural and consumer trends. Job outlook is good--marketing is all about invention and reinvention! People who do well can not only adapt to change but anticipate it and encourage it.
