Job Responsibilities
Processes, work instructions, tooling, procedures, process improvement via six sigma techniques, ISO compliance, workflow through the factory, handoff of product from one work cell to the next, work with quality manager to determine root cause of defects and corrective actions.
Job Requirements
Very little manufacturing is taught in college programs. They teach "business" for those "bright young MBAs with spreadsheets." They teach an industrial engineering course and civil engineering to build the buildings. My degree is in mechanical engineering, my experience is in the manufacturing of hybrid microelectronics and thermoelectrically cooled CCd cameras.
Uppers
The smooth introduction of a new product line.
Downers
Being the "tail of the dog".
Lifestyle
Lots of hours of "casual" overtime, i.e charity work. Travel to suppliers only when there are problems. Having lower "status" and pay than design engineers who's errors you get to fix or live with and explain in detail to management who think your job is so simple that they don't need to understand it.
Compensation
Generally, straight salary with no overtime or bonuses.
Advice to Jobseekers
Ba an accountant.
