Job Responsibilities
I manage the web development project as well as the day to day operations. I'm
also responsibile for security for the web site as well as various other
services
that run over the internet, such as email.

Job Requirements
This is not an academic program. You have to already know your stuff before
you get here. Like system administration, network security has also become an
"apprenticeship" industry. Some things simply cannot be taught in a classroom.
By the time someone can find and hire an instructor, develop a curriculum, and
get a text book, etc., all of the material is so obsolete as to be virtually
useless.
My job function overlaps into both of these areas heavily and adds managment
and code writing skills.

Uppers
Because I work for a university, I get to go to school for free. The benefits
(insurance, etc.) are awesome. The people are mostly pretty nice. The 37 1/2
hour work week. There is also very little time on call. Lots of vacation and
sick days. Pretty relaxed working environment.

Downers
The pay check is rather stinky. Parking is terrible. The political battles are
horrific. The entire place is extremely status concious.
|
Lifestyle
You MUST attend the Dean's parties.
|
Compensation
Compensation is terrible until you add in the educational benefit. The
retirement plan will match up to 8% of your salary at 1.5X what you contribute.

Advice to Jobseekers
I think that the outlook is fairly dismal. More and more of these jobs are
being
sent overseas. Find a profession that can't be outsourced, if you can.
