Job Responsibilities
My main responsibility was to do whatever I was told.I assembled sockets for computers. Each individual socket was assembled differently. Some orders were large,(sometimes 1000 pieces or more),some were small,(1-20 pieces). The large orders usually took several days with several people working on it. The smaller orders were done by a single person.I got alot of those because I completed them quickly and properly.Usually lasting about 10 minutes-30 minutes depending on how many sockets I had to assemble.I could assemble about 10+ of these smaller "kits".Most of these kits were assembled with tweezers and a magnifying glass. The parts are tiny sometimes and most of the sockets that are produced need to be assembled with a tweezer.
Job Requirements
I did not have to take any classes for this job. Training was provided once hired. Another employee did the training.I was elected to train new employees once in a while.Although trainers did not get payed extra for doing so.
Uppers
Working with intricate parts. Some of the sockets were fun to put together. It felt real good to get a "kit" done, especially when the socket gave me problems. Getting it done right and on time gave me a good feeling.( although there wasn't much praise for a job well done I still felt good about completing a kit on time)
Downers
It was hard on the eyes sometimes. Working with small to tiny parts put a strain on the eyes.
Lifestyle
No particular lifestyle...just about anyone could do this job.Work hours are usually 40 hours a week but there are times when unlimited overtime is allowed.Dress code is anything that does not show anything revealing.(ex. low cut tops, see through tops and short shorts are not allowed)The only social events are Thanksgiving dinner at the shop and Christmas dinner at the shop. There is no travel unless you are a salesman.
Compensation
Starting out is minimum wage.Usually at least one raise a year. (at the time I quit this job there had been no raises for two years due to lack of work and lack of sales)
Advice to Jobseekers
It's a great occupation for people who like to work with their hands.Although I would not reccomend working for the company I worked for I'm sure there are other companies that also do this kind of work. It's a challenging experience. As long as there are computers this type of work will be available.
