Job Responsibilities
Configuring, maintaining, updating, decomissioning various routers, switches, and servers (appx 2000 devices)that run the worlds largest fiber-optic Internet backbone, 40 hours a week.
Job Requirements
Certifications from various Internet vendors, like Cisco and Juniper, are a plus, along with a strong background in UNIX, helps. But, due to the rapidly changing Internet environment, on- the-job training does the job.
Uppers
Working on a fiber-optic network that moves all types of data at such enormous amounts is the best part.
Downers
Working with people who are un-motivated to work.
Lifestyle
It's a Network Operations Center (NOC) environment. 24/7. The shift can change on the drop of a hat. Business casual dress code. Expect changes on a daily basis.
Compensation
Base salary ~60K + 15% differential for working mid shift; bonuses quarterly with stock options and 401k options.
