Job Responsibilities
I work directly with my clients to improve there health and bodily functions using massage therapy and educating the client on lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life in conjunction with other healthcare professionals. I work anywhere from five to twenty hours per week.
Job Requirements
To become a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT), it is required to complete a minimum two year intensive college program with a 70% average or better. Topics include: anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology, kinesiology, assessments, remedial exercise, massage theory and treatments, ethics and 150 hours of clinical treatments, all taught or supervised by PHDs, Chiropractors and experienced RMTs. Upon completion, it is required to pass a written and practical exam for the governing College with a minimum 70% score in each.
Uppers
The best part of the job is the positive feedback I get from the clients I help, ranging from giving hope to a hopeless condition to completely fixing a physical problem that was thought to be a permanent condition.
Downers
Trying to help a client who's condition is too advanced and could have been prevented.
Lifestyle
Work hours are as flexible as may be required. There are courses, which are required, and seminars frequently available which may require some travel. A professional casual dress is usually the norm in this profession. Helping others is an absolute prerequisite for a Massage Therapist. The fame and fortune will follow.
Compensation
30000/year approximately. Can be less or alot more if desired but fluctuates with the seasons. Usually self-employed work (no benefits) but could also work for a clinic, spa, resort, etc.
Advice to Jobseekers
Registered Massage Therapists are one of the futures of healthcare. I will never regret learning this profession, even if I can't do it anymore. There are times when you can't "fix" a person's problem but they will always feel better after they leave your clinic.
