Job Responsibilities
Teach students in group and private lesson formats. Do freelance bodyguard and security work. Compete in martial arts tournaments. Sell my personal T-shirt line.
Job Requirements
Formal education is not required. However, I studied martial arts for over 20 years to achieve my level of expertise. That being said, my undergraduate education increased my business skills.
Uppers
Physical fitness; teaching students; competing; a sense of ownership
Downers
Inconsistent pay; very long hours; not a lot of room for growth
Lifestyle
Work hours averaged about 11 per day Monday through Saturday. This included my own training, as well as the business side of the operation. There was also a lot traveling involved for giving seminars and competing.
Compensation
Compensation could be great if you owned your own land. However, real estate prices are a killer. Plus, membership fluctuates directly with the state of the economy. In a good year, you could clear $75,000.
Advice to Jobseekers
Try to locate your school in an area with a lot of potential students, but relatively cheap real estate. The job outlook is not good.
