Job Responsibilities
Reverse engineering the existing prototype system, testing the prototype, debugging the prototype. P.I.L.O.T. = "Production Implementation Later On Today"
Job Requirements
With initiative and negotiation, it is possible to get a week or two of just-in-time training every year.
Uppers
Minimal travel, work that is truly helpful for national security.
Downers
Government (customer) executives are very good talkers but very poor listeners, and so they make poor decisions.
Lifestyle
We work about 45-50 hours a week, and travel about 5 weeks a year. The dress code is casual.
Compensation
My base salary is $94,000, plus $3,500 for skipping a vacation for the sake of the project. I hope for a 5.5% raise next May, plus a 4% bonus.
Advice to Jobseekers
Keep overtime under control by "blossoming" the project -- bringing on additional employees when the scope of the work increases. If overtime gets out of control anyway, negotiate with management to "roll off" of the current engagement to get normal hours.
