Job Responsibilities
Sales and delivery of consulting engagements for financial services companies.
Job Requirements
Johns Hopkins provided a great program in Management Science. The professors were tops in their discipline. Quality of the learning experience was exceptional. Grading was fair and balanced. The work load was demanding! The program provided a good foundation for many of the industry issues that I have encountered.
Uppers
The ability to help companies think through their challenges, issues and opportunities. The diversity of the engagements is personally challenging.
Downers
Travel commitments are extensive. If you are a domestic person, consulting is not a good profession. Also,if you are not a change agent, consulting is not the profession to be in.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle is an international one and is very diverse. Be prepared to go anywhere in the world and deal with many cultures. The hours are long. The downtime between assignments can trying!
Compensation
Compensation is very variable and depends upon market demand. Consulting at this time has not experienced high demand. Accordingly, rewards are not as high as other opportunities. Experienced professionals in consulting can have a higher quality of life and compensation working directly in financial services business. But, demand curves change over time!
Advice to Jobseekers
Talk to your spouse first! Review where you are in your career! Consulting is a good place for bright young individuals to learn about business and gain some industry insight and experience. Also, it is a good place for very experienced people who want to share their life learnings. The outlook is fair to good. Much depends upon America's economic recovery.
