Job Responsibilities
As a senior associate at the law firm, I have a significant
amount of case responsibility. I draft motions and other court
filings, correspond with opposing and co-counsel, engage in
discovery, and prepare/go to trial for complex litigation. I
cannot determine the break-out of this work per week, as the
stage of case really makes a difference in the type of work I
would need to focus on at that time. I am also involved in the
administrative aspects of the firm, and am a editor on a
seasonal newsletter that the firm puts out.

Job Requirements
The firm provides continuing legal education for the
associates. These usually occur on a monthly basis, and provide
useful materials.
|
Uppers
Taking on significant trial responsibilities, such as drafting examinations and
arguments and doing stand-up work, such as taking and/or defending depositions
and taking on pro bono cases. This also includes significant work with witnesses
and/or clients, including pro bono clients.
|
Downers
The tedious parts of it, including administrative work, and
working with supervisors who like to give associates a hard time.
|
Lifestyle
I usually work at least 10 hours a day, but I do get to travel usually at least
once a month. The dress code is business casual, and the environment is laid
back. The firm also sponsors social events - approximately one a month. The
good thing about my position is that even though I have a lot of responsibilities
and work a lot, I can pretty much make up my own schedule. I do, however, tend
to work several weekends a month.
|
Compensation
As a 5th year associate, I am compensated $175,000 plus bonus
pay. At 2,100, I am guaranteed a bonus of $15,000. I also
receive health benefits, put money in a flexible spending
account, and have a 401(k). I also am able to put pre-tax
dollars aside for travel expenses.

Advice to Jobseekers
Make sure this is something you want to do. You won't mind the
amount of work, if it's something you want to do. It can be
very rewarding, if you enjoy it. It's a field in which you'll
learn a significant amount through practicing. It's also a
field that's rather steady - there's always litigation. Have
confidence in yourself and pride in your work, and you will go
far.
