Job Responsibilities
Servicing hedge fund managers with reporting and client service to their investors. I monitor and report fund performance, compare funds to benchmarks and ensure risk controls are maintained. On a daily basis, I interaction with current and prospective investors. This includes managing a Customer Relationship Management database system. For new hedge fund clients, I design pitch books and other collateral materials.
Job Requirements
My background makes the venture possible. After working for a hedge fund service provider for 2 years, I was able to secure clients based on my reputation and work ethic.
Uppers
Flexibility to work on many different projects. Working from home is also a plus in the summer! I set my own schedule which works for me because I am really productive at 3am in the morning.
Downers
Still working to build up steady income to a level that is comfortable for me. Some months I am unsure of where revenues will come from until I get up and go secure them. Unlike my corporate experience, there is no allowance for down time these days. Starting a business is tough but the rewards are great. Once I have enough clients to live comfortably, the perks are locked in and the job security is actually greater than the corporate world.
Lifestyle
Work hours are sporadic. Some days I work for 2 hours, others I work for 16 hours. Business travel comes up about once a month. I attend social events organized by industry groups that are great networking and new client opportunities. Dress code is super casual until I head out to meet with clients. Meetings with clients are formal so the dress follows suit.
Compensation
Base salary is 75K. Each additional client increases income by 25 - 40K. I pay my own insurance through the Freelancers Union.
Advice to Jobseekers
The hedge fund industry is indeed exciting. It is moving quickly and there are still many opportunities to innovate and corner a market for yourself if you are entrepreneurial and good at going out and finding the right people to advance your business.
