Job Responsibilities
My major job responsibility is to provide advise to the organization I work for (internal customers) and to project clients (External customers) on standards and legislation pertaining to occupational health, safety and environment relevant to their work processes. This takes up about 70 percent of my time in a 40-hour week. The remaining 30 percent is spent maintaining the management systems used to ensure that all operations are incident-free and compliant to occupational health, safety and environmental regulations and standards. I am currently on the Executive Management Development program of our company, and this position was deemed most suitable as a starting point in my career.
Job Requirements
The MBA is a 56 unit program designed for working professionals with a minimum of 3 years working experience, and an interest in business operations. Quality of classes are excellent, with highly qualified professors. Popular classes are on a first- come, first-served basis during enrollment (which is done online), and grading is a clear-cut system that gives you a fair picture of what you need to do to meet the standards for a certain grade. Workload is manageable for those who hold full time jobs.
Uppers
One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to learn new things by getting myself updated with standards, best practices for the industry and emerging legislation. Another part of my job that I enjoy is the opportunity to write and create presentations, which allow me to express my artistic side, albeit in a technical field.
Downers
The worst part of the job is convincing people of the importance of making it a way of life - having to become an advocate for it as well.
Lifestyle
Work requirements will include both office and field work, so expect to get your hands dirty. Travel is required if your office is located far away from the plant or work-site where the hazards are. In the oil and gas industry, this line of work pays well because of the hazards involved and the degree of specialisation needed to be effective in the position.
Compensation
As mentioned before, the position pays well, especially in the industry I'm in, compared to the wage brackets and similar positions in other industries. The benefits are attractive also, and meet the nationwide standards.
Advice to Jobseekers
If you are interested in this job, make sure you enjoy working with people and ideas, and have excellent communication skills, because these are what will make you effective in the job. Of course, there's no beating having the passion to do it as well. The outlook for this job in the future is very bright.
