Job Responsibilities
I work on special projects for the marketing department of the HP Industry Standard Servers Group. I work on temporary assignments that help the product launch processes work more smoothly and to reduce costs. My work requires interaction with the various product groups (engineering staff, supply chain and finance staff) and product managers.
Job Requirements
An MBA is required for anyone who will be in marketing within the HP. It helps if you have an engineering background so that you have in-depth knowledge of the products and the technology behind them (a competitive advantage of HP's products), but that is something that marketing people learn on the job anyway.
Uppers
Interaction with different product groups gives me a high-level vantage point on the organization and its place within HP as well. Because HP is a huge company, people often feel that they work in silos.
Downers
It's important to start networking right away. At large companies like HP, you have to know people to truly perform your job well.
Lifestyle
Dress code: business casual / casual; Work hours: 40 hours per week - more at certain times during the product launch cycle; Travel: limited to about 5-8 times a year within the U.S. and internationally; lots of company social events and individually organized events. The environment is definately made up of people with technical (IT, computer hardware, software) backgrounds. The engineering community is less social than the marketing community. Diversity: lots of Asians and Caucasions, but a limited number of African Americans and Hispanics. The culture of the company is very friendly towards diverse cultures and there is a large staff of HP offshore workers.
Compensation
Starting compensation is competitive with the market. Bonuses and raises depend strongly on company performance, so when times are good, the pay is good; when times are bad, the incentive part of the salary goes down too.
Advice to Jobseekers
Although HP is undergoing a corporate cost cutting exercise, there are pockets within the company where there is strong growth and hiring. Submitting the resume through an employee is a definate plus, but all hiring is done through the website, so it is important to submit online.
