Job Responsibilities
I was in charge of receiving purchases from the purchasing department, And entering them on Bin Cards; I issued them to the various departments--kitchen, bar, restaurant, mini-bar, banquet upon requisition. At the end of the month I and the Food and Beverage Manager take Inventory, and prepare Inventory Control, and submit the sheets to the food and Beverage Manager for onward submission to the acounts office.
Job Requirements
They needed someone with Canadian Hotel experience, possibly, a high school graduate, but I was lucky because of my accountancy and costing experience. When they tried me I could easily do it.
Uppers
I loved serving the overall department. The Chef came to me for his orders. The Banquet in their busy days and best uniforms were always smilling to me. I could drink anything I wished and eat any food I wished. I always had my crate of pop drinks given me and I dont pay for it. The President of the Hotel, the Accountant, the Food and Beverage Manager, The Che, etc were all nice to me. I was actually part of the managenet because I was present in their meting and they required info from me often.
Downers
My job was to be a Storekeeper, but somehow they tried to make it a receiving job whereby, I was the one loading most of the purchases that arrived from suppliers. Sometimes I became to tired before getting behind the bin cards to enter and do other paperwork. Later, I had to leave this job to become a Licenced Insurance Agent later with Mutual of Omaha, Toronto, after writing and passing the Ministry of Financial Institutions ams on Life Insurance and Disability.
Lifestyle
Very busy job. 8-to-5 type of job. It involves smiling and sweating. There is no travelling involved but sometime if the Purchasing Manager is not there, the experience storkeper can be used to do the purchases, for he knows his Re-orer Levels. Afterall, it is he who informs the Purchasing Manager of his re-order level and advisenhim to start ordering.
Compensation
I was paid bi-weekly, $500 per week after deductions. The bae Salary was $18,000 p.a. plus free drinks and food etc, less CPP, OHIP, I/TAX.
Advice to Jobseekers
Experience in Costing and Food and Beverage is very important to maintain this job for long. They must not make mistakes in calculation and it would be noticed by the other departments involved because as he isue to them, they too keep their own recors They must be flair in Mathematics especially, Arithmetic.
