I am responsible for the strategic control of our supply base:
how many suppliers do we need, how many domestic versus global
suppliers, who are the best partners, how do foster competition,
how do we maximize the realtionship.

Career path - Started in product development engineering (3
years), moved into design engineering management (5 years), spent
time as a factory manager (1 year), back into product development
management (2 years), then VP of Procurement.

Uppers
Exposure to lots of companies and how they do what they do(textiles, steel,
particleboard, paint, glass, aluminum, electronics). Exposure to global sourcing
(China, Europe, Asia).

Downers
I tad more travel than I would like. Constant tension over
commodity prices rising. Need to be wiling to aggressively
challenge the supply base periodically and aggressively defend
them internally at other times.

Lifestyle
In general I work 7-6 with and occasional evening or weekend. I travel, on
average, 3 days out of every 2 weeks. Just starting to attend the company social
events (a good thing). You need to be professional, but you do not need to be
stiff, overly formal, or conformist.

Compensation
Total salary and benefits package is about $150K
