Job Responsibilities
My daily eight hour routine consist of greeting clients, answering phones, scheduling appointments, conducting client interviews for purposes of gathering confidential personal and financial information required to complete the filing of customers tax return. After completing the return I give money saving advice based on information provided. The advice given varies based on the clients filing status and whether or not they own a home, have dependents and are at or reaching age of retirement. I even give advice to those last minute clients who always wait to the last minute to file their returns because they may or may not owe. Those clients are usually my favorite because I get the pleasure of telling them their intended refund due/owed. It is always a pleasure giving them information on ways to save money that they were never even informed on. Lowering somones tax liability has always been a good way of retaining and gaining a new client for the next season to come.
Job Requirements
I have to take a variety of classes in order to maintain my level of competency and accuracy on returns completed or corrected by me. My classes range from Business Ethics, Everyone's Return, New York/New Jersey, Schedules C,D,A, Corporates and Trust, Business Entities, Basic Tax Preparation, UDC, Hurricane KATRINA, Military Tax, KETRA in all classes token I averaged a Required 80% and above. My work load consist of any where from 100-350 clients in any given season and my retentin is at 67% or better.
Uppers
Seeing the look on your clients face when you tell them their bottom line and how nuch they can look forward to saving on next years taxes with estimated amounts if any. Finding deductions that clients didn't otherwise think/know they qualify for, therefore lowering tax liabilities and increasing refunds. Knowing I have satisfied yet another client to the best of my abilities.
Downers
Not being able to help a client who owes and can't possibly qualify for any other deductions.
Lifestyle
The position is very demanding if you are not versatile you may not be able to adapt to the many different financial situations and personalities you come across on a day to day basis. Education and communication are key factors in this field. The hours are excellent you set your own according to your availability. The dress is business casual, no jeans.
Compensation
Your salary is determinded by your level of knowledge and years of service, bonuses by customer satisfaction and retention. Stock options and benefits by years of service at H&R. Me personally, I make $6,000-$7,000, I'm in my 8th year and get to exercise my stock option this year.
Advice to Jobseekers
If you decide to join this particular field, my only suggestions are to make room for advancement and become diversified because there is plenty of the two and the sky is the limit. Keep your wits about you, your gonna need them.
