Job Responsibilities
Steping in to this position with no knowledge became a very exciting and challenging adventure. Keeping up with the daily operations involves a large variety of multitasking responsibilities: Daily deposits of contribution/donation. Monthy invoice billings from the Emergency Shelters. Reconciling expenses against Revenue. Review of new and up coming grants. Plenty of meetings with Manager's/Director's of the Emergency Shelters. Information updates. Journal Entrys and lots and lots of research to balance the monthly reports, just to name a few. What a great job, one down fall non-profit means your pay comes out of the contributions and Grants funds, do to loss of funding I just lost my job, but other than that, its a great feeling knowing that you help support the needs of the homeless and hungry.
Job Requirements
Most Grant Specialist positions require 3 or 4 year Accounting and Business degrees, Grant Writing Skills. Indept of Operation Budgets for variety of Grants. Reconcilingt of Debit and Credits. I was blessed having the oppurtunity to expierence this position. I would have to get more education to move forward if I were to stay in the job field. Learned alot though being on the sidelines.
Uppers
Working as a team with the Shelter Manager's getting the yearly budgets set up, reviewing the budgets for changes due to exceeding the limit, and working with the Grant Funders.
Downers
Last minute coping of contribution checks and deposits, reason being we get the mail in late and the individual or groups sending the donations must receive a letter within a certain period of time for tax purposes.
Lifestyle
Normal fourty hour week. No overtime unless required. Little travel to drop off billings or deposits at end of month. Very little social events unless you choose to do so. Business Casual dress code and of course there is lots of work if you choose to volunteer you services.
Compensation
Salary is based on expierence, having very little in the field, but having 17 years banking expierence starting pay was 30k. 403B Pension Plan you put in 3 % and they match. Three tiers of health care, dental, Life and LTD, not sure of stock and no bonuses that I know of.
Advice to Jobseekers
Spend the time looking in to the degree of Education and Skills that are needed. Keep in mind you could loose your job if funding is elimated or operating expense are not kept in line. Must have a deep care for other's and look at the big picture of helping lose less fortunate.
