Job Responsibilities
As a Program Director, you are responsible for designing and
implementing a fundamentals based curriculum for elementary aged
girls. A daily tolerance and fondness for working with children
is recommended. Other major responsibilities include budget
managing, supervising girls on fundraising, planning an annual
camp outing, grant writing and oral presentations to funders.
|
Uppers
This position provides a very flexible schedule and predominantly female and
child-friendly work environment.
|
Downers
As a non-profit organization, you are always at the mercy of
grant foundations, jumping through hoops, up for reviews and
answering questions on how money is spent. The organization also
has a large volunteer base. This gives them a sense of
entitlement that isn't always warranted.
|
Lifestyle
Attire is pretty casual when working with girls or on camp assignments. Work
hours are generally 9-5, except during Cookie Campaign, which requires all hands
on deck. Unfortunately, this organization is still playing catch up in areas of
diversity. Large metropolitan areas will have better representation.
|
Compensation
Salary for this position starts around $28,000 with dental,
vision and medical benefits for full-time employees. It also
includes a small mileage reimbursement. Bonuses and salary
increases depend on how well the particular council is doing
each year.

Advice to Jobseekers
Several councils are down-sizing and consolidating positions due
to the state of the economy. Those with excellent grant writing
and fundraising talents will weather the storm.
