Job Responsibilities
My responsibilites include carrying a case-load of youth who have been removed from their homes due to unsafe/unsuituable environments. I offer these youth support services and programs. Some of these youth have been reunified in the home or put into and alternative living situation. These youth often have anger issues, depression issues and are dealing with the after-effects of abuse or domestic violence in their lives. I offer counseling and support services to these youth and the adults in their lives
Job Requirements
At the undergraduate level I found it very easy to get into the classes the I wanted or that were required. I was required to take a Humanities base courseload in the first year at the University of Dayton. These classes were well taught and comprehensive in their respective subject matters. I felt the grading was fair. There was an attendance policy for the Humanities classes. If you missed more than three classes your grade would drop one grade point. I also felt the workload was fair and the professors were committed to quality teaching and learnning.
Uppers
I feel I am truly making a difference in the lives of other people. This provides me a sense of satisfaction that I am really having a positive impact on the lives of others. I also feel there is such a great need for the services that i provide in the country that we live in.
Downers
i feel social service workers are underappreciated in the United States society. This is reflected in the salaries of those who work in social services and non-profit agencies. It is probably the biggest downfall and complaint I have about my job. I also think there is a great need for the services that social service professionals provide.
Lifestyle
The workers are very committed to their work. Most people choose social services/nonprofit work b/c they truly believe in the work and the cause. Money is not the attraction to this profession. Most people I work with have a caring nature and are very respectful of others and the differences that people have from them.
Compensation
The salary for social service positions is not very high. The benefits are usually pretty good. Education and experience can definately help those going into social service get a high salary.
Advice to Jobseekers
I think social services will always be in need in our country. It is a profession that really makes you feel like you are achieving something and making a difference in the world around you. I think it is a profession that wonderful caring people are drawn to and even though salaries are not very high, satisfaction levels amongst these professions is pretty high.
