Job Responsibilities
I look up, price and sell auto parts to retail, wholesale and internal customers. I also am back-up cashier, shipping and receiving and assistant manager. I spend 15+ hours a week as cashier, and the rest as parts consultant. The time spent as cashier completely interferes with my job as parts consultant, but I am the victim of downsizing.
Job Requirements
There are no requirements for high school diploma or GED, of course it helps unless, you have educated yourself, you must be intelligent and able to retain large amounts of knowledge, and think very quickly.
Uppers
The people I get do deal with on a daily basis. The challenge of trying to find the right part on todays technologically advanced automobiles. The pressure of having to look the parts up quickly and get it right the first time, you have to be very good at your job.
Downers
The hours, and there isn't much flexibilty being a woman in a man's field, I can't take time off like other women I know in other fields. I have to be here. The fluctuation in the car market can make my job seem vulnerable. You must be very good at what you do and have the right personality to make your job secure. Working in a dealership is like being on a nother planet sometimes, it takes a special person to handle it, especially if your a woman.
Lifestyle
Dress code is very casual, I've even worn sweats to work. The hours range from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The men outnumber the women in the parts and service side of the dealership about 25 to 1. So you must be a very strong confident female and keep the men in check. The only social events are a summer picnic and a Christmas party typically. The job is a lot of fun, very fast paced and technical. It's a great challenge, and every day is different.
Compensation
My base salary is only $1200 a month, but I make 4% commission off of the total groos profit of my department not just my own sales, which varies from about $1350-$1800 a month plus bonuses which only amount to about $100 month on average. 401K matches .50 on the dollar up tp 6% of salary. Health Insurance is offered at a fairly reasonable expense and also disability insurance is also offered. Of course really good deals on new and used cars is nice.
Advice to Jobseekers
I think this job will become more and more technical over time and the pay will increase. I believe more women are entering the field and should continue, this kind of work is perfect for women. Women are really good umder pressure and at multitasking. I would and have recommended this job to others. It's alot fun and you learn something new almost everyday.
