Job Responsibilities
I am an analyst covering banks. Analysts at Fitch typically cover a portfolio of 12 banks as a primary analyst, and 12 other banks as a secondary analyst. the job involves writing a yearly report on each company covered as a primary analyst, plus a few ad-hoc reports or sector reports, focusing on the creditworthiness of the institution, with the aim of giving the institution a credit rating. From an entry level, analysts are invited to take parts in credit committees.
Job Requirements
I studied at HEC School of Management, one of the French "Grandes Ecoles", with a major in finance. It is a 4 yeat educational programme, with prior to that 2 years of preparatory school. The school is regularly ranked as the #1 business school in France, and also offers highly-ranked MBA and executive education programmes. Quality of teaching is excellent, with highly regarded professors, a high percentage of which come from abroad. During the first 4 trimesters, most classes are compulsory, including basic classes in finance, accounting, finance, foreign languages etc... The progressively, students have to choose more an more optional course from a large range of possibilities, with the aim of progressively specialising oneself before the final year, the "major". It is common, if not compulsory, to take a one year gap before the final year to get professional experience, which is a chance for many students to have a job offer before even graduating, and the opportunity to make the most out of the courses taught in the final year. The workload increases progressively until th efinal year, the first one being considered by most as a chance to "socialise". This is partly due to the intense workload required during the 2 years preparatory school, and the high competition during the entrance competitive exams, after which only a small percentage of applicants are offered to study at HEC. It is quite easy as well to take advantage of one of the numerous exchange programmes, and at least 25% of students spend a semester or two in one of the prestigious foreign universities that are linked with HEC (includes the London Business School, HSG St Gallen, NYU, MacGill etc...)
