Job Requirements
My academic background. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Communication & Information Systems Management from Ohio University. My core classes range from programming and lab/theory for Voice & Data Networks, to intensive Business Mgt/Admin and Interpersonal Communications. From a business management aspect, I am extremely over qualified for this position. The environment at this company, from an IT department standpoint, is rudimentary Network Operation Center and assembly line project/request work. I've evolved my role. I was originally hired as a Network Engineer. The job description was a hoaks and led me to believe that it was similar to my Systems Analyst role @ P&G, but it wasn't. So, I've evolved my role into what the company was lacking and has needed.
Uppers
More visibility than before.
Downers
Micromanaged, No sense of leadership or direction, reactive/reactionary environment - no proactive or anticipatory efforts, subjective unmeasureable enviroment, no clear ratings system, strickly subjective based on impressions, more personal than professional, no clear career path within company, no opportunities for raise or promotion, upper management wants too much control, too many levels of management and redundant resources. All functions limited within roles to tangible "Check sheet" type tasks.
Lifestyle
Work hours are strictly 8am-5pm. Management expects you to be here at 8am, but also expects you to stay later than 5pm, no flexibility. Business dress is formal - ties for men and dress suits for women. There is no business travel for non-Sales roles. There is little to no diversity. Very caucasian, middle age men with women in more sales and admin roles. Vacation days are strictly banking holidays.
Compensation
It was made clear to me when I was hired that they rarely allocate budgetary money for raises. I have been at this company for 2 years (since I was downsized with 9-11) and have not had a raise or bonus or any rewards or recognitions. I am an exceptional employee and my story however is the norm.
Advice to Jobseekers
If you are interested in IT, do not work at this company. This company is very silo-ed and hierarchical. From a sophistication and enlightenment standpoint, this company is behind the times. It is really decentralized (many different isolated business units/companies) and is reminiscent of a bank from the early 80s. There was a management change recently which give me hope for the future; however, management still does not want to invest true consulting efforts or resources or money into exploring outages and repairing them. Although I have evolved to my role into putting some work behind this, I still have no tools, or mgt support to help me.
