Job Responsibilities
Produce periodic revenue reports for management - 10 hours Facilite capital purchases for sites - 10 hours Serve as liason between corporate and sites - 10 hours Serve as business owner of several I.T. applications - 5 hours Ad Hoc financial analysis - 5 hours
Job Requirements
I have an undergraduate degree totally unrelated to my position. I started as an entry-level PC Technician and worked my way up the ladder so all of my education is OJT. I am in my second semester of my MBA.
Uppers
I enjoy learning about the business especially from the high-level corporate point-of-view. I also like the laid back atmosphere of the workplace.
Downers
Being at the corporate office makes you feel very removed from the business as we don't get the chance to visit the sites very often. Since you are doing analysis all day, sitting in your cube all day can be a drag. There is the politics, hypocrisy, etc. that exsists at any big business. The potential for being pigeon-holed as an analyst forever is also a downer.
Lifestyle
I work 40 - 50 hours a week, generally from 9 am - 6 pm. I may take 2 - 3 business trips per year. We don't do a lot of formal social events but often go out for drinks after work. The dress code is business casual (khakis and a polo shirt are fine for men). Since I run a lot of numbers all day, it can get a little boring. You should be prepared to sit in a cube all day and stare at excel.
Compensation
The salary is in the mid-high 40s for a run-of-the-mill analyst with the chance at a small bonus at the end of the year (i.e. $1,000). There is the opportunity to be a senior analyst or the like that would probably make 8-10K more and have the opportunity for a more substantial bonus (i.e. $5,000). No stock options at this level. Benefits are nothing special: medical, dental, 401K, tuition reimbursement, etc.
Advice to Jobseekers
Companies are becoming very numbers-driven so this is a good position for the future. Companies will always need good analysts. However, it's not for everyone and can be very boring for a lot of people so be warned.
