Job Responsibilities
Supervisory/managerial over finance, accounting, inventory, human resources, budget planning, financial analysis, monthly, quarterly, yearly statements, daily banking transactions including shareholders and subsidiary accounts, liason between IT department and all other company departments for employee computer problems, direct contact to owner of company for day-to-day functions. There's really no specific amount of time each day for some days only 10 minutes is needed for a specific job which could in turn on some days require 2 hours. I have set my goals and have exceeded them many times EOM closing complete by close of business 2nd workday of new month. Many times have closed and new months business start on the morning of the first work day.
Job Requirements
If you desire to be in a business background start early with all business, math, technology, computer, management, accounting courses that you can handle. In my case I love math and wanted to be a CPA with computer technology background. The majority of the colleges I took were taken after already employed and it was a part of OJT. You get a degree but have already been in the workplace performing the same duties and more you stand a better chance of being hired by someone else should you so desire, than someone whose straight out of school with no training whatsoever. OJT is the way to go for all you gaining experience, while continuing your education. Because so many colleges and universities offer classes at night, on the weekends and also onlne, it's easy to earn a living getting experience while getting your degree. It's easy to find what fits around your workload.
Uppers
There's always a challenge to be met each day and a sense of fulfillment when goals are accomplished.
Downers
If a person does not like working with numbers there's always a chance the job can become boring and monotonous day after day. There may be days you take the job home with you which is not good for neither for yourself nor for your family if you have one.
Lifestyle
Should always be open for challenge, accomplishments, disappointments. The job does not stop at the end of the workday for tomorrow is a continuation. Depending on the company you work for and the type of business they perform some work hours could be 9-5 or like in my company's case from whenever to whenever. I have a lot of business travel and company social events both of which are very enjoying. Because we are involved in many trade shows, the dress code at the trades shows are office casual with the last day being jeans and a company shirt. At our company the dress code is extremely lax due to at some time or other all employees are expected to work in production which is in a huge air conditioned warehouse but loading dock and other doors are always open. Shorts and t-shirts (as long as the shorts are not distasteful are authorized. No tank tops for obvious reasons though. The company is like one big happy family with persons from all backgrounds.
Compensation
Base salary-$4,500 per month, 10-20% base salary bonus each month depending on company's previous months activity goals, anniversary date bonus $250, Christmas Bonus - 1 month salary, five weeks paid vacation per year w/option to sell 2 at eoy if not used, paid health insurance, 2 weeks paid sick days per year, short- term and long term disability, 1 month paid medical leave after sick days exhausted, paid education,
Advice to Jobseekers
This is a very lucrative field and theirs always options for employment from start to retirement. The outlook is there will always be a demand for accountants. The downside if working in the private sector due to our economy stand a chance of company closing down completely and having to pound the pavement once again.
