Job Responsibilities
I oversee the financial components of a multi-million dollar, multi-year Contractor/Back-Room Operations/Asset Management Contract for my Agency. One of my major responsibilities is examining the interface between costs and equipment/services delivered to my Agency (70%). Attending oversight and supervisory committee meetings (20%). Preparing service level agreements and awards status reports and requests for information (10%).
Job Requirements
At East Carolina University, I received a B.A. (Double Major) and M.A. in Political Science and History and a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia specializing in American Government, Constitutional Law and Public Adminisration. While at Georgia, I began working for the Federal Government, specifically the Department of Health and Human Services as a Presidential Appointee (appointed by President Jimmy Carter); was RIFFed by President Ronald Reagan but was quickly hired into the career federal service at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation where I have remained.
Uppers
Before this interesting and challenging assignment, I was a Risk Management Specialist so bring that critical, questioning posture to this new, held less than one year, assignment. I love the interaction with the contractors and new co-workers. The kinks are being quickly worked out and I am more than ready, willing and able to provide my input/advice/counsel on how to improve processes and controls, command and accountability structures.
Downers
Having to continuously be in the position of scorekeeper, notetaker, assessor is not always pleasant. I do not supervise any employees but have to perpetually "supervise" my contractors as my daily, weekly, quarterly, annual input determines their awards and raises.
Lifestyle
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation labels itself the Federal Employer of Choice and makes effort and takes pains to recruit and retain a well educated, diverse workforce. My work is basically office based and sedentary but I at least once a year have the opportunity to travel to our Regional and Field Offices to meet fellow asset managers and other employees.
Compensation
The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation is one of the most generous employers in the Federal Government as our funds are not Congressionally Appropriated. We basically earn about 20% more salary and benefits than a main-line, appropriated federal employee at the same grade and level of duties and responsibilities.
Advice to Jobseekers
My advice, come in ready to learn. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation provides numerous opportunities for employees to obtain advanced academic degrees, most especially, but not limited to, banking and finance related areas and we boast a comprehensive mentoring and job rotation program.
