Job Responsibilities
They fall into three categories: Sales, Finance, and Personnel. Theoretically, I am supposed to spend equal amounts on each every month, but I tend to focus mostly on Sales because without revenue their is nothing else to manage. My sales responsibilities include direct sales on current and future key customers, follow up on other sales personnel and joint sales calls with those individuals on customers. Personnel, probably takes the second most amount of time because I realize that I can't do it all myself and need competent employees who excel. Finance or asset control in my situation is critical of course, but to me seems to be more of the no brainer stuff. It is controllable at least.
Job Requirements
??? Is this for the job survey or school survey?
Uppers
The ability to create and control your own destiny. I am judged by my results and they are out for all to see. I also love working with and mentoring others and seeing them succeed. It's also great to work with customers and see them turn from almost adversarial roles to true partners.
Downers
You can only enjoy your successes for a short time. We have monthly goals (sales, etc.) and you can feel good about your success for about one day and then you are worried about the next month.
Lifestyle
My average work day is about 10+ hours or so. However, since I have to visit stores all over LA, drive time may add 2 hours each way. You have a lot of autonomy however and can create your own schedule if you do have other activities that need accomodation. The dress code is business casual in this field. I probably wear a tie to work 4 times per year and wear jeans an equal amount of time. Travel for meetings and trainings is probably every two months or so. Overnight travel is often required weekly within a district covering a larger geographic area.
Compensation
Base salaries range from $60K-$100K depending on experience, location, and whether asking you to take on a problem. Bonuses are paid quarterly and average 25% or so of the base. However, the range is very wide. Benefits are basic, health care, dental, vacation, 401K, etc. Stock options have been paid and were very lucrative.
Advice to Jobseekers
You definitely need to be a self starter who is able to give direction and provide a path for others to follow. You have to be someone people look up to and want to follow. You must be empathetic to others situations, but not a bleeding heart or a pushover. A basic understanding of business in a variety of aspects is necessary.
