Job Requirements
This position requires an extensive background in math, computer
science, and engineering. Classes are typically very intense and
fast paced. Competition tends to be very sever.
|
Uppers
The best part of the job is seeing the completed design functioning as expected.
Also, it is exciting to be in a field that is advancing at a fairly rapid pace.
There are always new information to study. Travelling to customers and industry
meetings can provide a change of pace.
|
Downers
The job does typically require more than a 8 hour day. Solving
programming bugs coupled with the pressure to get the job done
can also be very frustrating.
|
Lifestyle
Work hours are typically not defined but normally more than a 40 hour week is
usually required. Business travel depends upon the person and specific job
duties. Most positions normally do not require any significant travel. Dress
code in most companies in this industry is business casual. I have encountered
some that have no dress code at all!
|
Compensation
Pay is above average for the geographical area. But the jobs are
only in a limited number of regions which tend to have a higher
than average cost of living. Some companies do offer stock
options, but I have never been in such a position. Other
benefits are typically above average.

Advice to Jobseekers
This field is not for everyone. It does provide an opportunity
for people interested in computers and enjoys turning ideas into
reality. The future for these types of jobs is not clear at this
time due the trend for companies to outsource.
