Job Responsibilities
As a reading teacher my major responsibilities are to meet with a group of 6-9 students (as assigned) on an elementary school site after regular classes are dismissed. The students, all at same grade levels per session, were enrolled for 2 days weekly for 1.5 hours class time either on monday/wednesday or tuesday/thursday classes weekly. My work schedule included working monday-thursday with 2 reading groups on their specified days and the actual paid hours were 4 days @l.75 hours which allows 15 minutes prep time and totals 14-16 hours biweekly each pay period. The students actually participate in class from 4:00- 5:30 per session twice weekly which totals 3 hours of instruction weekly over a 12-week period. During each class the teacher engages students in phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary and oral fluencey. Assessment of student reading ability are recorded in pre-testing, post-testing exercizes, daily workbooks and shared with parents during conferences.
Job Requirements
The qualifications for a teacher position with Educate Inc., part of Sylvan Education Solutions, start with a Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Liberal Studies, Education, English Major and/or Language Arts. Passage of the CBEST is required if you have not taken the Liberal Studies program. This position is especially appropriate for CLAD Teacher Credential program enrollees and Substitute teachers of a local school district. These teacher credential elementary or secondary training programs are rampantly available in California and every state at the State University level and also provide magnanimous student financial aid resources. Due to the excessive percentage of elementary teacher retiring annually at the close of each school year credential programs are curtailed classes to fit needs of full-time employees. The Teacher Ed Dept at State universities welcome students to enroll in evening credential programs that are held from 6:00-9:50 weekly over a 10-week quarter period. Once enrolled you are assigned an advisor who faciliates you in geting started with basic required classes and provides you with the suggested credential program outline for a 2-year period. I have found that professors utilize fair grading practices when evaluating coursework of students, whether younger or older, everyone is emotionally supported and encouraged to do their best. Consequently, a teacher position with Educate Inc. for 7 hours weekly as a minimum is great when you're a credential student.
Downers
In general, the ability to establish a good rapport with your students during the first week while introducing the program and implementing pre-tests can be very challenging. For first time students/teachers its essential to get your own discipline system in place immediately, explaining consequences of unacceptable behavior. For experienced teachers maintaing discipline and keeping the class under control will be less challenging.
Lifestyle
If your are a new college student in your twenties, a Substitute teacher ages 30-60 or one within the retirement range, the after-school positions only schedule work hours from monday-thursday weekly. The dress code is the same for Educate Inc. employees as the public school district you are assigned to. In addition, business travel, company training events are always conveniently planned and strategically located to accommodate the majority of employees driving distance. All employees are paid (recorded on time card)to attend training workshops and follow-up training sessions. The training room locations are well planned with enthusiastic, qualified and culturally diversified personnel.
Compensation
The rate of compensation for Educate Inc/Catapult Learning or Sylvan Learning Centers is excellent with continuos upgrades and annual pay increases. When employees provide referrals of friends who get hired and work at least 6 months for the corporation they receive a cash bonus. The benefits department located in Baltimore, Maryland mails out pertinent offers for options of life insurance, market investments and/or retirement accounts.
Advice to Jobseekers
Educate Inc. has the most outstanding job outlook for part time jobs that I have ever discovered as an educational professional seeking better opportunities. My only regret is that I did not realize how easy it was to inquire on-line until reaching the age of fifty. Just visit the website at www.educate.com and click on the links of human resources, Educate Inc., Catapult Learning. Also be sure click the link for mission statement and I am certain that you will be just as amazed as I was.
