Job Responsibilities
Customer Service (the customers being: students, teachers, parents, other staff from the particular school I work in and miscelaneous people such as staff from other schools, staff from our main office and the tech people).Customer service is provided by e-mail, phone, and in person and takes up approximately 70% of my time. Another major responsibility is taking charge of the accounts receivable and accounts payable which takes up approximately 25% of my work day. I process all funds received at the school from fieldtrips, donations, fund- raising campaigns, from students, donation campaigns, etc. Mainly, I pay all invoices received at the school and reimburse any staff reimbursements that are due. The balance of my day is spent doing miscelaneous tasks. Overtime is spent keeping up or catching up on whatever needs to be done by a deadlines. I support 2 administrators, approximately 30 teachers and 10 miscelaneous staff, and 330 students.
Job Requirements
This school has 2 programs: French Immersion and Spanish Bilingual programs. Both programs are approximately the same size and generally everybody who requests a certain program gets it. These programs are specialized and are taught by specialized teachers.
Uppers
Time off: Summers (July and August), Spring break (one week off at the end of March of each year) and 10 days or more off during the Christmas Holidays. Staff: Staff members are supportive, considerate and friendly. Accounts payable and accounts receivable: providing I do not get interuptions. It is a satisfying part of my work because I attain a concrete end. (I know what the end is and how long it will take me to get there.)
Downers
Interuptions: So many interuptions that it takes much longer to complete a task then it should. Too big a workload: Not having anyone to help me with my workload (according to averages in the company, there should be two of us doing my job). Therefore, the stress and frustration is high. Stress: Every job is stressful, but I can never seem to walk in my office. I'm always rushing (or running) from place to place or from task to task.
Lifestyle
Be prepared to work hard and to be able to multi-task like you've never multi-tasked before. If your goal is to have a lot of time off, this is the job for you. The outlook looks poor. Already, many in this position are leaving to find better jobs or going on medical leaves due to the demands of the job.
Compensation
My approximate hourly wage is $16.00 per hour over a 10-month period. No bonuses or stock options are possible. The benefits are the usual ones; except that Medical Coverage is 100%.
